7th Trip
Hallaton, Market Harborough, Notts. CC CL 7th – 11th April 2008
A very pleasant, clean, tidy and quiet campsite is 38 Medbourne Road,
Hallaton, Market Harborough, a Caravan Club CL for 5 caravans maximum at a
time. Situated in Leicestershire, it's basically "a back garden" on a 1/4 of
an acre of land belonging to a smallhold farmer who turned his land into a
Caravan Club approved Certificated Location for caravans, motorhomes and
tents.
It's open all year round and offers a choice of hardstanding and soft
pitches with electric hook-up at only £7 per night. Hallaton is a lovely
quiet village approx. 7 miles North East of Market Harborough. Market
Harborough is located in a rural part of south Leicestershire, upon the
River Welland. It is very close to the Northamptonshire border. The town is
roughly 15 miles (24 km) south of Leicester and 10 miles north of Kettering.
The town is near the A14 main road and Market Harborough railway station is
served, by the Midland Main Line railway. There is also a branch of the
Grand Union Canal which terminates on the north side of the town. Nearby to
the town are the famous Foxton Locks.
Foxton Locks was one of the reasons for choosing this site for our 8th time
away in the caravan. An acquaintance and his family took their holiday in nearby
Rutland Water the same week and we arranged to meet up at Foxton Locks with
their friends. A lovely time was had by all. Foxton Locks are ten canal locks
consisting of two "staircases" each of five locks, located on the Leicester
line of the Grand Union Canal about 3 miles west of Market Harborough, and
are named after the nearby village of Foxton in which can be found one of a
very few remaining road 'swing bridges' over the canal.
Hallaton is probably a bit out-of-the-way for most people planning a few
nights away but the tranquillity and scenery is worth it if peace and quiet
is all you're after. There's still plenty of places to visit in the area,
something we didn't do this time because of a) the Foxton Locks meet and b)
a trip the next day to my wife's folks. The final day was spent relaxing on the
site. It's not somewhere we would have plucked off the map as a viable
location but we would certainly go again.
