Welcome to my World
of
Caravanning
It all began in the
Summer of 2007
I was bored and decided I wanted a new hobby. I was stood at the
bedroom window, elbows on windowsill and chin in cupped hands and
wondering what to do, when a caravan over the road caught my idle gaze.
Then it dawned on me. I wanted a caravan.
I decided to look out for an
old caravan to do up.
Then the fun began. We started looking for a caravan, then decided on a
small motorhome after seeing how big caravans were and wondering if it
would fit on our shared driveway. Then it was back to caravans again
after realising the expense involved in owning a motorhome, not to
mention numerous disadvantages and their pokey interiors. This time it
was smaller caravans such as Freedom, Microlite and Eribas.
We fell in
love with the Eriba until.....
To cut a long story short, we found a 1992 Elddis Wisp 400/2 at a
dealer in Rugby.
It was just the right size to fit on the driveway and
roomier than an Eriba or motorhome. We both fell in love with it and
bought it there and then. A week later on 24th September 2007, after
being fitted with a Powrtouch motor mover and being cleaned and
serviced, it was delivered to us and parked on our driveway. And we
hadn't even got our tow car yet!
Then began a labour of love. The old carpet was replaced with a new
wood-effect lino flooring, safety equipment installed, alarm, plastic
storage boxes screwed to the floor under the seating, cushions and
curtains washed, 12V electrics rewired, new sockets fitted and much
more. Two weeks later, it was ready for it's first voyage and we STILL
hadn't got a tow car!
A friend of ours towed it to a local C&CC site just 5 miles up the road
for our first trip away so we could test everything out and towed it back
home again for us after staying two nights. That was it. We were smitten
with caravanning. Over the next 12 months, several more modifications and
other accessories had been added to the caravan. And 17 trips away, a total
of 57 nights in the caravan later, the caravan was another year older. |
